Enhancing health and
quality of life

The Barunga Community Laundry is now proudly owned and operated by Bagala Aboriginal Corporation. Originally established in February 2019 as the pilot site for the Remote Laundries project, this service has become a powerful example of how locally-led initiatives can improve health, hygiene, and overall well-being.

By offering free access to commercial-grade laundry facilities, the laundry continues to support the fight against preventable diseases like scabies and Rheumatic Heart Disease — while also strengthening community pride and self-determination. As of 1 July 2025, the laundry is fully managed by Barunga locals, for Barunga locals.

Improved Hygiene and Health

The laundry service supports community health by offering free and reliable access to hot water, detergent, and industrial strength sanitisers. These are key factors for killing scabies and reducing the spread of infectious diseases.

Significant Impact on Scabies Rates

In the first three years, the laundry program led to a 60% decrease in scabies presentations at the local clinic, contributing to better health outcomes. Fewer repeat infections that can lead to long-term health complications.

Job Creation and Community Empowerment

The laundry service generates local employment, providing jobs and skills development for our mob.
