We’ve got big news! As of 1 July 2025, Bagala Aboriginal Corporation is taking full ownership of the Barunga Laundry.
This is a proud and powerful moment. Back in 2019, we were chosen as the pilot site for the Remote Laundries project, helping to co-design and shape what has become a nationally recognised model for community-based health services. With strong results in scabies reduction and local employment, our laundry has been a community success story from the start.
Now, after years of joint operation the laundry will return to local hands. Bagala Aboriginal Corporation will run the show, handling everything from staff rosters to stocktake.
This is a massive step forward for community ownership and self-determination,” said BAC CEO Steve Smith. “It means more than just running a laundry. It means having control, building skills, and supporting our mob our way.
Community response has always been positive, with locals taking pride in having access to clean clothing and bedding. Beyond health benefits, the laundry has become a community hub, a place to connect, and a source of meaningful employment.
